Building Solar Battery Boxes
Recently, I’ve gained a big interest in solar panels and batteries. It all started when I saw an add in the paper for solar panels and batteries from Harbor Freight. I originally knew nothing about electricity, but this interest pushed me to learn more about how electricity works. Instead of purchasing what I saw in the ad, I decided to build my own setup and learn along the way. This was the beginning of my journey into building solar battery boxes as a hobby.
While building these portable solar-powered battery boxes, I gained extensive knowledge about various aspects of solar energy systems. I learned about different charging profiles and the unique properties of various battery types, along with the importance of properly sizing wires and battery cables for efficiency and safety. Additionally, I discovered how to position fuses and breakers correctly to protect the system, as well as the role and functionality of charge controllers in managing energy flow. I also explored the limits and efficiencies of solar panels, gaining a deeper understanding of how to maximize their performance. Throughout the process, I encountered numerous opportunities to expand my technical skills and deepen my understanding of renewable energy systems. Building these boxes not only offered hands-on experience but also provided a rewarding way to explore sustainable energy solutions.
Choosing Sustainable Options
I now purchase used batteries and make various type of solar battery boxes for all types of use. I primarily use them as a backup power supply for when the power goes out. This specific box will charge some lights and my fridge for about a day.
I’ve also been recycling lithium ion batteries from old laptops and reusing them for other projects. These lithium batteries have some amazing power and capacity still left in them. Just be careful as these batteries are very volatile.
